The October / November Calendar

It’s Fall! Best Things to Do In San Diego …

Look, fall in Southern California doesn’t mean changing leaves or crisp air. It’s an optical illusion. You get that scorching Santa Ana wind blowing off the desert, a golden, late-afternoon glare off the Pacific, and the distinct realization that you are in a town built on tacos, cold beer, and navy ships.

If you’re kicking around Downtown this October and November, here’s where you actually want to be to for a true San Diego Fall experience.

October 24–25: Día de los Muertos in Old Town

Jump on the trolley or walk up from 8th and G to Old Town. Forget the commercialized nonsense—the heart of this thing is the ofrendas. You’ve got entire streets lined with marigolds, flickering candles, pan de muerto, and framed photos of the departed. It’s a loud, beautiful, wildly unapologetic celebration of life and death, surrounded by the smell of woodsmoke and sizzling carnitas. Respect it, eat something hot, and soak it in.

November 11–15: San Diego Bay Wine + Food Festival

Five days of glorious, sun-drenched, over-the-top culinary indulgence right on the Embarcadero. You’ve got world-class chefs, rogue winemakers, and local fishmongers setting up shop right next to the saltwater. It’s chaotic, it’s delicious, and if you play your cards right, you’ll spend the afternoon drinking exceptional Baja reds and California whites with the Pacific breeze hitting your face.

Late October to November: Baja-Style Fish Taco Hunts

Forget the white-cloth dining rooms for an afternoon. Walk down toward Barrio Logan or the waterfront, find a beat-up truck with a line out front, and order two beer-battered fish tacos loaded with crema, cabbage, and hot salsa. Squeeze the lime, stand on the curb, and eat it while it’s dripping down your forearm. Experience the soul of this city.

November: Gaslamp Quarter After Dark

When the sun drops and the Gaslamp turns on those historic streetlamps, the neighborhood shifts. The summer tourists are gone, the weather is perfect, and the dive bars and neighborhood joints open up their doors. Grab a stool at a darkened wooden bar, order a proper drink, and watch San Diego nightlife  do what it does best: stay effortlessly cool while the rest of the country freezes.

The Artifact Inn sits right in the thick of it at 8th and G—your basecamp for the food, the booze, and the noise. Lock in your room at www.theartifactinn.com.
