The Artifact story begins in 1887 with the construction of a 2 storey Victorian home on a vacant lot at the corner of 8th Avenue and G Street. By 1900, this boarding house was soon incorporated into a larger two-part commercial building with hotel rooms above.
The Blair Boarding House, Oakley Rooms, Lee Hotel were among the monikers employed by various lodging establishments. Sometime in the 1920’s the original Victorian exteriors were ‘updated’ to their current Art Deco style.
Recently remodeled and restored, The Artifact offers guests a re-imagined historic stay, with guest amenities of a modern boutique inn.
The newly renovated buildings feature updated electrical, all new heating and air, new plumbing, rebuilt stairways and access points, improved insulation and finishes, and modernized kitchens and baths.
Additional features include an expanded and enhanced café, and introduction of a garden courtyard for relaxing, outdoor dining, or events.

The Artifact is situated at one of the best locations in downtown San Diego. The intersection 8th Avenue and G Street is where East Village and Gaslamp Quarter meet … north of Market Street but south of Broadway … a few minutes’ walk to Petco Park, Balboa Park or the Convention Center.
Within 4 blocks of The Artifact the visitor can find over 70 restaurants and more than 30 bars and nightclubs. A dozen coffee shops are but a short walk away, and the neighborhood hosts a range of businesses that make one’s stay convenient … grocery stores, dry cleaners and laundry, copy and print shops, drug stores, hardware stores, convenience stores and various specialty retail and services.
